The Marriage of Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro) is set in Count Almaviva?s castle in Seville in the late 18th Century. It is based on Beaumarchais?s 1784 play La Folle Journ?e, ou Le Mariage de Figaro, a sequel to his earlier play, Le Barbier de S?ville (The Barber of Seville), familiar to opera audiences through Rossini?s great opera (Mozart?s opera premiered in 1786; Rossini?s premiered in 1816). In Le Barbier, Count Almaviva, with substantial help from Figaro, wooed and won the lovely Rosine away from her crusty old ward and would-be husband, Dr. Bartholo.

In The Marriage of Figaro, Beaumarchais continued their story. The Count has married Rosine but their marriage has gone sour because of his philandering. Figaro has quit barbering and is now the Count?s major-domo. He is engaged to Suzanne, who is Countess Rosine?s maid ? and the Count?s intended conquest. Old Bartholo is back to seek revenge on Figaro for taking Rosine away from him, with the help of the slimy music-master, Don Bazile. Adding to the fun are an amorous teenager, a scheming old maid, a drunken gardener, and a silly young girl. Much happens on a single ?folle journ?e? ? a crazy day.

Mozart?s librettist, Lorenzo da Ponte, took this popular play, removed ?political? content that would have offended the Viennese imperial censors (the French Revolution was only a few years away), and faithfully translated the rest into Italian ? the customary opera language of the day. With Mozart?s masterpiece of a score, the result was a witty yet profound tale of love, betrayal, and forgiveness.

Nanki-Poo has banished himself from the little town of Titipu because he is hopelessly in love with the beautiful young lady, Yum-Yum. Yum-Yum however, is engaged to her guardian, Ko-Ko. Upon learning that Ko-Ko has been condemned to death for the crime of flirting, Nanki-Poo returns to Titipu to claim Yum-Yum?s hand. After an odd turn of events, it turns out that Ko-Ko has not only been reprieved of his death sentence, but has earned a promotion to the post of Lord High Executioner. Unfortunately, he is not a big fan of killing people. With the Mikado of Japan becoming increasingly annoyed at the lack of executions taking place, Ko-Ko makes a deal with Nanki-Poo. He allows Nanki-Poo to marry Yum-Yum for one month, as long as he is executed after that month. The Bard?s famous comedic romp known for the brilliant war of words between the feisty Beatrice and the staunch bachelor Benedick, Much Ado About Nothing plays out amidst the brittle high spirits of a post-war house party. When Don Pedro Prince of Aragon visits Leonato, Duke of Messina, love antics ensue. War hero Claudio falls in love with Leonato?s daughter, Hero and their marriage is agreed upon. While marriage preparations ensue, Don Pedro schemes up a plan to make old flames and longtime bantering partners Benedick and Beatrice fall in love. Despite Beatrice?s ire against Benedick and his claims to being a confirmed bachelor, when each overhears that the other is in love with him/her, he/she begins to wonder whether love between them is possible. Meanwhile Don John, the prince?s misanthropic bastard brother, contrives a more malicious plot to make Claudio believe his betrothed is unfaithful. The wedding day arrives, and Claudio denounces Hero at the altar. When Hero faints, the men abandon the wedding party, and she takes the advice of the Friar ? who is convinced of her innocence ? to pretend to be dead until the truth can be revealed. The foolish constable Dogberry and his watchmen overhear Borachio boasting of his exploit and the plot is exposed. Claudio promises to make amends to Leonato: he is required to marry a cousin of Hero?s in her place. When unmasked, she is revealed as Hero. Claudio and Hero plan to marry, and Benedick and Beatrice do the same. This charming exploration of love and marriage, friendship and honor, features some of Shakespeare?s wittiest and most poignant dialogue.

Oklahoma! is the first musical written by the team of composer Richard Rodgers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II. The musical is based on Lynn Riggs? 1931 play, Green Grow the Lilacs. Set in Oklahoma Territory outside the town of Claremore in 1906, it tells the story of cowboy Curly McLain and his romance with farm girl Laurey Williams. A secondary romance concerns cowboy Will Parker and his flirtatious fianc?e, Ado Annie. The original Broadway production opened on March 31, 1943. It was a box-office smash and ran for an unprecedented 2,212 performances, later enjoying award-winning revivals, national tours, foreign productions and an Academy Award-winning 1955 film adaptation. Oliver! was the first musical adaptation of a famous Charles Dickens work to become a stage hit. (Besides the fame of Oliver Twist, another reason for the success of the musical was the revolving stage set, designed by Sean Kenny.) There had been two previous Dickens musicals in the 1950s, both of them television adaptations of A Christmas Carol.

The show launched the careers of several child actors, including Davy Jones, later of The Monkees; Phil Collins, later of Genesis; Alan Paul, later of The Manhattan Transfer; and Tony Robinson, who later played the role of Baldrick in the television series Blackadder. The singer Steve Marriott (Small Faces, Humble Pie) also featured in early line-ups, eventually graduating to the role of Artful Dodger in the West End production.

The plot of Dickens? original novel is considerably simplified for the purposes of the musical, with Fagin being represented more as a comic character than as a villain, and large portions of the latter part of the story being completely left out. (It may well be that Bart based his musical on David Lean?s film, rather than Dickens? book). Although Dickens? novel has been called antisemitic in its portrayal of the Jew Fagin as evil, the production by Bart (himself a Jew) was more sympathetic and featured many Jewish actors in leading roles: Ron Moody (Ronald Moodnik), Georgia Brown (Lilian Klot), and Martin Horsey.
